led astray

eating my words

A few years back, I was dating a really sweet guy. He had some medical problems and I didn't know how to handle them. I felt helpless when he would pass out, which happened often. I don't know what caused it. There was nothing to be done. I couldn't handle being around him very often, despite really enjoying his company. I broke up with him by saying something awful. I told him he didn't need a girlfriend, he needed a nurse. And I haven't seen him since. He's married now (or will be soon) and I am really glad he found someone with more patience and warmth than I could muster at the time. And I don't think there is a single level on which I am not sorry for what I said. That was not a shining moment for me and I hope he forgives me.

Maybe I was saving all my patience and warmth for now.

He is married. It was a nice ceremony; I was in it. He still has some health problems but last I heard was doing ok. I haven't spoken with him in awhile, but can pass your sentiments along if you wish next time I see him.

We all have things we aren't proud of. May hurting someone's feelings always be the worst of them.

Is "Cheers" a good response?
