led astray

reality and fantasy

Someone I should have been good friends with died.
I wrote a play.  It's violent, but it has a point.  It's not just violence for the sake of violence.  I didn't write it just to shock people.  If it's in a action movie or on the news, it's ok.  But if it's in a serious form (movie, play, art) then obviously it was done just for shock value.  That's a copout for people who don't want to look closer at the violence and examine the roots.  There is a comment.  It's painfully obvious to me.  In fact, I've been worried that the blatant and blunt handling of the subject matter may render it trite under the heady metaphores of those more talented than I.  But blunt is who I am and what I do, and to write any other way would just be an aspect of me, and not all of me.  Some famous guy said that the author dies when the work is complete, and that the work lives between the text and the audience.  If my work is as bald as I find it, then that's fine with me.  The author's note would read: Violence for the sake of shock is your fear's excuse not to have to think about it.
Another friend is having a baby.  I hope all is well.
